Nutrition Tip from March, 2008
3/1/08
Many people know that fish is healthy for you. It contains healthy fats
which are responsible for healthy brains, good cholesterol levels, and also
is a great source of protein. However, many people have concerns about
eating fish due to mercury content, and fear eating fish may be unhealthy.
NPR (National Public Radio) recently broadcasted a report about this issue,
and evaluated fish sold in grocery stores and restaurants. Click
here to read or listen to this report on NPR's website. To summarize the
report, swordfish, shark, tilefish from the Gulf of Mexico, and king mackerel
had levels of mercury above the FDA standards. Also, sushi (yellowfin) tuna was found to
have high levels as well. The safest tuna fish is canned light tuna. If you love
sushi, tilapia and saba (mackerel, but not king mackerel) are better options.
NPR also reported that fish oil tablets do not contain mercury, although this information is
not contained in the same summary on their website.
